Hand or wrist fractures occur when any bone in the hand or wrist area breaks. Fractures range in severity from minor hairline fractures, when the bone endures a small crack or severe bruise, all the way to more traumatic injuries, such as an open fracture which occurs when the bone has actually broken through the surface of the skin. In most cases, hand or wrist fractures cause pain, swelling, and throbbing.
